We Still Need Human Connection

August 3rd, 2010

star, britt, jodiA few days ago I was asked by a reader of Star Lee Magazine to come to her women networking gorup, Women’s Business Social in Ojai, CA at a great little venue Papa Lennon’s

I love Ojai and find it a very beautiful and inspiring place to be. It is a short 40-minute drive from my home so Brittany, the General Manager of SLM, and I decided to wake up early and go. I am so glad that we did. Jodi Womack, host and founder of the group, had found SLM online and subscribed.

Jodi with MagWhen she was speaking to the group and sharing information about the magazine and how it had touched her life she said she “had found her people.” I felt the same way standing amongst the 60+ women she had brought together to support one another! Many of them inspiring artists and enterprising women themselves. I so enjoyed hearing the stories many of them shared. We spent two hours learning and networking with each other and listening to passionate woman sharing their talent and art with the world! It inspired me to the point where the rest of the day I felt like I could conquer the world.

This experience reminded me that even though the internet and virtual world is an amazing tool with infinite possibilities, the worth of the human connection is all the more meaningful and valuable for us. The human connection is crucial. The internet allows us to find “our people” and gives us opportunity to create personal human connections in a much deeper and more meaningful way.

Here is to human connection and Success on Your Terms™!

One Person Can Make A Difference

July 19th, 2010

When I sat down to write to you this morning I was sidetracked by a Facebook message from a friend saying hello. Twenty minutes later I realized I was still engrossed in connecting with friends and decided I would check my Inbox before signing off. I am so glad I did.  Sitting in my Inbox was a message “Ode to a Joy” from my cousin Cara. Today marks the 9th anniversary of Cara’s sister and my dear cousin Rena’s early passing from breast cancer. After reading the message I found myself tearful and melancholy, with that mixed feeling of being both happy and sad. I was missing Rena, but also remembering her kindness, loyalty, friendship and wisdom beyond her years. Cara ended her letter with, “Rena’s joy was a gift. One that she was able to simply open up and receive from the very beginning.”

I have decided to take today to celebrate Rena as well as the strong women in my life whose joy and wisdom made an imprint on me and shaped the woman I am.  I would like to share with you four of these women.

My mother, Roseanne, an eccentric artist who has always showed me that having the courage to be myself is the only way to really live. She has shown me that anything is  possible for me if I put my mind to it and just figure it out for myself.

My Grandma Annie, known as the “Cookie Lady,” doled out an abundance of joy and a smile with every tasty treat. She worked at the bakery around the corner from her house for 35 years. Her quotes still ring true to me today. “Choose your friends, don’t let your friends choose you.”

My Grandma Savo was a women of few words who spent most of her time in the kitchen sharing her love through food. She stood all of 4-feet 11-inches tall and never weighed more than 79 lbs. She would tell me “Never do anything you wouldn’t want posted on the front page of the NY times” and “When it’s all said and done all you have left is your integrity.” Small but mighty is the only way to describe her.

My cousin Rena was wise beyond her years. She was a Love, a Light, and a Joy. Her sister, Cara, writes that she was “the 5 to my 6. Her faith, genuine. Her friendship, true.”

Rena was a musician, a teacher and an artist. Her legacy she leaves behind has nothing to do with business but all to do about her Brand and Imprint.  Nine years later people remember and honor her by sharing stories about the imprint she left on their life and the gifts she left behind.

Are you spreading your joy, your gift? What is your imprint? One person can make a difference.

Opening My Mind with Joanna Garzilli

June 24th, 2010

On a recent beautiful summer night I set out to do something for myself, open my mind and expand my experiences. I had the pleasure of attending an event at Soho House West Hollywood, a private club for the entertainment industry and business elite. Fantastic food, socializing and networking abound as members learn from each other’s expertise in a collaborative information. (Sorry no cameras were allowed.)

Celebrating with Joanna Garzilli, Nick Garzilli, Kim Castle and Ali Brown after completing an Evening of Psychic Development at private members club Soho House West Hollywood.

Celebrating with Joanna Garzilli, Nick Garzilli, Kim Castle and Ali Brown after completing an Evening of Psychic Development at private members club Soho House West Hollywood.

A friend of mine, Joanna Garzilli, invited me to an intimate event she was hosting to learn more about tapping into my inner psychic. She is the author of Unleash The Psychic in You. I am a big believer in trusting your intuition for successful decision making. This is really what Joanna talks about in her book and what I believe has have helped me become successful in my life. I really had no idea what to expect at the Soho House event, but was open to the evening.

Joanna discussed ways in which we can recognize the voice of intuition, how we can smell, taste, touch and feel our body’s reaction to energy, and how we can tap into these unconditioned natural responses we have.

This experience made me realize that each of us may apply this fundamental and universal application of the senses to our own brand. Experiential branding, I’m calling it. Experiential branding is when you are keenly aware of how your product, service or self interact with the connection of the senses. The more sense you bring into an experience, the more intense and memorable it will be. This is the same for branding and building your business or strategy.

When planning your next product or service see how you can incorporate more of your senses in to your Brand DNA.  Smell, sounds, taste,  texture, touch, sight and beauty.

Life gives us valuable lessons – if we pay attention

May 26th, 2010

Lily and I on our avacado farm in Santa Rosa February 2008

It’s funny how life always gives us the lessons that we need. Or reminders of what we need to learn if we pay attention. For example, parenting and raising well-balanced and self-sufficient children is much like building a well-balanced and self-sustaining business.

I was out with my 5-year-old daughter, Lily, the other evening. We were headed to Michaels craft store to get a gift for my niece’s birthday. As we walked in, there was a free craft table for children to create an art project. Lily was so excited – just like her mother, she loves to be creative and get her hands dirty.

She made me the sweetest decoupage of a farm and signed her name on it. She was so proud and so was I. These are the gifts that make for lifelong childhood memories. We carried out her gift, beaming.  We had a bonding moment and it was a wonderful mother-daughter  time. Next stop that day was to do a little shopping next door. So Lily got her own cart and put her art project in the cart and wanted to push it around the store herself to make sure it didn’t get banged or damaged as it was drying.

IMG00098-20100526-0954

While we were shopping and our backs were turned, someone unknowingly took Lily’s cart – with her art project in it. The cart was nowhere to be found. I look into Lily’s gray-green eyes, welling up with tears, and jumped into mommy action mode. “Lily, don’t you worry,” I comforted her. “We are not leaving the store until we have checked every last cart, or until the store is closed and we have exhausted every one of our options.”

I asked Lily, who is learning about impatience, if she was up for this challenge. “You will need to dig deep and put your patience hat on.” She answered me, very seriously, “Yes, Mommy, I will be patient.”

Now, it was already a late night, my kids are the type that are up early and in bed early and it was already 7 p.m. Lily and I went around the store looking in the bottom of many carts. We then enlisted the help of the store manager to do a store-wide announcement. Our last option was to wait at the checkout section and check every cart as they were emptied.

The whole time I was talking with Lily and telling her that we will do everything in our power to find her art project but we are not going to get attached to the outcome. Whatever the outcome is, it is, and we will do our best and let the rest go.

IMG00096-20100526-0952I tell you that nearly two hours later the store was closing, we had exhausted every option and solution and then…. I checked a cart and there it was!  Lily, the store staff, and I literally jumped for joy! We had done what we set out to do and the outcome was what we had hoped it would be.

Today that picture frame sits on my dresser and every time I look at it I am reminded about how precious life lessons come in unexpected packages. The important message of persistence’s power and how if you stick to your plan and stay focused on the positive was imparted to my daughter and I that day and, because we paid attention, is something we both benefited from in our lives.

Are you nourishing the most important relationship you have?

May 17th, 2010

images-73When we hear the word relationship we think of our husbands, parents, children, friends, siblings, or loved ones.  But the relationship I believe is the most important one any person can have is the relationship you have with yourself.

I challenge you to communicate the kind truth with someone you have been avoiding. For example, this could be a client that may owe you money. Address the issue directly, with truth and kindness, and state what outcome you would like to reach. See what happens. You may not get the answer you were hoping for but you will definitely learn something about yourself in the process.

I challenge you to tell yourself the truth. Never lie to yourself.  A little part of you dies each time you lie and you are pulling yourself away from being your better self.

I challenge you to look at an uncomfortable relationship in your life. It may be with a co-worker, vendor or independent contractor. Ask yourself “Why is this uncomfortable?” “What does it bring up in me and what positive action can I take to make this better?”

I challenge you to create a culture in your company based on your authentic values. State in writing what your company is about and then make it your policy to uphold those values.

I challenge you to express your gratitude for the people in your business or family that support your aspirations. Either write a traditional letter, send an e-mail or connect verbally.  It will make you feel great and the recipient of this authentic gem will appreciate you.

I challenge you to connect with yourself and to enjoy your company alone.  When you enjoy your own company, others will too.

One of America’s leading experts on “Courage,” speaks about Star Lee Magazine’s Inaugural Issue

April 27th, 2010

Hi,

I wanted to share with you a letter I received from a member of the Star Lee Community after she received the Inaugural Issue of Star Lee Magazine themed Courage.  Sandra speaks about Star Lee Magazine and how courage affects us all.

C1_SLM_v1i1_COVER_lowResFacets of Courage

When someone writes about courage I am intrigued, so I was stunned when I learned about the launch of the new Star Lee Magazine and that they had the courage to focus on courage as their inaugural topic! Why am I curious? I always wonder: “What’s going to be their angle?” Every day I receive Google Alerts highlighting articles that use the word courage or courage leadership, and find that most address physical courage such a famous athlete overcoming an injury, an innocent child suffering from a grave and rare illness or those confronting fears much the same as history’s Sojourner Truth or Sacagawea.

While physical courage is important, there are actually a variety of facets to courage. To recognize courage, it helps to distinguish the various facets. Some of us manifest certain types of courage well but come up short in other areas. There is spiritual courage, emotional courage, leadership courage, ethical courage, physical courage, political courage and personal courage. Star Lee magazine chose “personal courage”—the one an everyday female entrepreneur (like you and me) can apply right now. For example, in the article “Work-Life Balance” the writer wants you know “you have already arrived” so you stop sabotaging your life by worrying too much to prove your worth. For my work in feminine courage, “to know you’ve already arrived…” means the person lives a “courage-centered” life—it’s intentional!

The most critical issue as you embrace this forgotten virtue is to give yourself permission to claim your everyday courage—not the media’s angle of sensational, amazing, tragic or scandalous types of headlines, but the type that allows you to brand your style. When self-doubt creeps in, ask: “How can I act with courage?” The way to access your courage is to pause and reflect. Ask: “How frequently do I swallow my voice?” Then determine how courage can differentiate you and showcase your talents. i.e.: the article “What do Mother Teresa & Paris Hilton have in common?”

Once again I was surprised as I read through the “From Our Readers” section. The publisher requested that readers share, among other things, “…where you are stuck.” This is great! Until we take time to stop and reflect, to let go of our attachments to our gadgets, and the self-identification to our “busyness,” most of us will remain in our StuckThinking™ patterns. Staying stuck in our scripts keeps us doing the same thing over and over. When a host of difficulties comes your way a courageous woman refuses to give up in spite of all the obstacles.

Editorial Director Dawn Mena’s “Welcome” had great examples of “personal courage” such as starting a new business adventure or saying “no” to a client that does not mirror your values. Dawn brought courage down to Earth rather than making it into a BIG word applied only to heroes or heroines. I interviewed a female Captain Firefighter and she told me her actions on the job have nothing to do with courage or being a hero—it’s what she was trained to do, and she’s doing her job. Dawn’s examples fit my thirteen years of original research on courage, courage leadership and feminine behaviors of courage! I was finally reading something about everyday courage, not the headlines!

Featuring Rosie the Riveter on the cover and Star’s identification to Rosie’s legacy is a good example how Star followed her heart (which happens to be the original definition of courage, corage meaning “heart and spirit”). When other magazines were shutting down, Star focused on her heart’s passion and started a magazine geared toward the style of women entrepreneurs. Star’s personal courage allowed her to design her life, and with no regrets! Regrets are lost courage (generally, never to be reclaimed)! No regrets mean holding oneself 100% accountable for choices including being told by men that if she moved to an avocado farm no one would take her work seriously, but as Star said, “We must embrace the fact that women do entrepreneurship differently.” Star trusted her intuition and trusting intuition is the exact opposite of living in fear. Claiming your own courageous path eliminates regret allowing you to create your courageous legacy daily.

A symbiotic relationship merges when you combine your personal courage and your intention. This says you witness courage at its best—a contagious antidote! Overall, the assessment that I hold is our culture perpetuates pitching courage and fear against each other. I always think of the John Wayne quote that epitomizes and enables this dualistic belief and brands courage as bravado: “Courage is being scared to death…and saddling up anyway.” For me, a strong heart has no fear. Someone said, “One cannot discover new oceans until he [she] has courage to lose sight of the shore.”

The publisher closed with a piece called “Inspiration is Contagious,” and here Star confirms her courageous heart and how she manifested a vision! She is truly a role model for courage. Star’s courage gives other entrepreneurial woman permission to be courageous. I declare, “Courage is contagious.”

As “The Courage Expert,” how will you choose to design your courage to advance in your true work? If you have to work, make it your Truth. In truth, you will find your passion. With unceasing zeal, declare what I call a “Declaration of Courageous Intention” and use this tool as a compass on your life’s journey. Concentrate on intentionally blending courage consciousness with spiritual awareness by joyfully designing a reservoir of courage that becomes contagious in all areas of your life. What matters most is that you take positive action, now, to declare your intent.

May the feminine energy of courage reveal your mysteries and elevate possibilities for you and all women as you discover how you can take your courage to work!

Embracing the Virtual Office

April 13th, 2010

With the world getting smaller by the moment, the virtual office is a paradigm of how our workplaces have evolved in order to survive and thrive. Think about the transition over the last 60 years of technology such as AM/FM radio and only three television networks, to the current multi-media convergence of internet, TV, radio and cell phone.

The virtual workplace has embraces the power of today’s multi-media technology and given power to the people. It has also allowed for a virtual world in which geography and time are no longer boundaries to be overcome.

A recent example occurred with my own business, as an employee of mine had traveled to New Zealand, halfway around the world from California, and yet was able to work with ease and grace. Even when an unforeseen problem popped up with a client, we were able to use Skype, a voice over internet service, to coordinate a virtual meeting, find a resolution and satisfy the client’s needs within 24 hours.  Technology is amazing when used to serve a solution.

How to Save $1,000,000

April 8th, 2010

I lost $1 million by making the following mistake with my business, so listen closely as I share my failure with you, so that others won’t have to go through the pain of learning this lesson:

As enterprising people we have a tendency to preconceive how we should accomplish our goals and try to follow them exactly as the vision in our heads directs us. When we take this ambition to an extreme it does not honor the process of discovery and the journey that entrepreneurship naturally is.

When an outcome does not manifest itself the way you would like, you should realize the lessons you’ve learned, and heal your pain by sharing this with others and helping them to avoid the same mistakes.

For example I once hired someone because I was desperate. I had allowed my business and my work load to get out of hand. I had done a great job of attaining clients, but soon found myself frantically working 14 hours a day, drowning in the work.

Not only was I living in counterbalance to my values, putting money and control first  instead of my family, but I also did not listen to my intuition and my inner voice during the hiring process that said “this person is not a good match for my values.”

I was fooled by the green monster. Not jealously – greed! I had allowed my pain and my desire to keep the money flowing make the decision when I was hiring. I suppressed my intuition many times over the year that this woman worked for me.  My inner voice became louder and more intense as the months rolled on and I wasted valuable time by choosing the false sense of peace from a desire to please other people over the truth my intuition was telling me.

This happened some time ago, and I have come to peace with the experience and the lesson that was meant for me to learn. I believe that  everything happens because I am meant to learn from my experiences. I guess I had to lose an amazing amount of money to realize that intuition is the doorway to living your truth and there is no exception.

I can now say I am grateful for that situation because I will never again ignore my intuition. This experience allowed me to tap into my energy, take note and connect my head and my heart. I suggest you take inventory the next time you hear your little inner voice and listen.
